This week's flower

A cross of Pink Kush and Vader OG, which makes it OG family on both sides. Pink Kush is the British Columbia selection out of OG Kush — sweet and floral, with pink pistils; Vader OG is Ocean Grown Seeds' cross of SFV OG and Larry OG. Dense, resin-heavy flower from both parents.

Bred by Upstate Elevator Operators in Vermont, crossing Elvis with GG4. Elvis came from Seedism before that, out of AK-47 and a sativa-leaning Skunk #1. Leafly named it Vermont's strain of the year for 2023.

Reservoir Seeds crossed Killer Queen with Willy's Wonder, and the name nods at both parents as much as it does at the films. Skunky and tangy on the nose, with a floral finish behind it.

Compound Genetics crossed Do-Si-Dos with Kush Mints for this one, which is also listed as Ego Checker. Dense, grape-shaped flower with orange hairs and amber trichomes, and a nose of nutty cookie and citrus with fresh mint through it.

The Lit Farms release: E85 crossed with Rainbow Sherbert #11, with a single phenotype selected out of a large pool of seedlings. E85 is itself Wedding Cake and Project 4516, and RS-11 came out of the Doja Pak line — so it is dessert genetics on both sides.

Seed Junky Genetics in California crossed Wedding Cake with Gelato #33 to make this. Both parents come out of the Cookies line, and it shows in the flower: dense, heavily frosted, and sweet in a creamy, doughy way rather than a fruity one.

T.H. Seeds crossed G-13 with an OG Kush male and stabilised the result. It took first place in the indica category at the 2003 High Times Cannabis Cup and placed again the following year. Tight, resin-coated flower with a lasting pine note.

In House Genetics crossed Mendo Breath with Do-Si-Dos, so this shares a parent with the Mendo on our own shelf. Published accounts describe a floral nose with berry through it, and a flavour that reads earthy and sweet.

Alien Genetics crossed Alien Tahoe OG with Lemon Alien Dawg for this, and describe it themselves as raspberry sorbet with lemon behind it. Heavy trichome coverage. The original phenotype is discontinued, so what circulates now are later selections.

Cannarado Genetics crossed Banana OG with Sundae Driver for this one. Sundae Driver is itself Fruit Pebbles OG over Grape Pie, which is where the grape underneath the banana comes from. Limonene leads the terpene profile.

DNA Genetics made this one by crossing Chocolate Thai with Cannalope Haze. Long, light green buds with orange pistils and a heavy trichome coat, and a nose of cocoa and roasted coffee over something sweeter, closer to melon.

Symbiotic Genetics crossed Clementine with Purple Punch to make this. The Clementine side carries the citrus, which is what most people notice first; the Purple Punch side brings denser flower, deeper colour and a sweeter fruit note underneath.

A phenotype of OG Kush from Dark Heart Nursery, close kin to Fire OG. Earthy and woody, with lemon, pine and a touch of fuel — the signature the OG family is named for.

An indica-leaning cross of NYC Diesel and Milky Way. Dark green buds carrying so many orange pistils they can read as orange outright, under a white frost. Diesel from the one parent, something sweeter and creamier from the other.

Rare Dankness crossed Grape Ape with their OX line for this one. Grape Ape brings the nose that names it — sources describe sweet grape with blueberry behind it — and it finishes indoors in about sixty to sixty-five days.

Tuna Kush crossed with Blueberry, out of western Canada, and no published account names the breeder. Sources put a piney, fruity nose over diesel with blueberry underneath, myrcene leading the terpenes, and dense buds shot through with small orange hairs.

Blue Dream crossed with Afgoo, by a breeder nobody has ever put a name to. The berry comes off the Blue Dream side — published accounts describe blueberry with pine behind it, and a smoke closer to diesel and wood.

Selected by the Jungle Boys team in Los Angeles. Published accounts give the cross two ways — Jungle Cake with Gelato, or TK Lato with Jungle Cake — and the name covers several selections, so a jar's background depends on who grew it.

A cross of LA Confidential and Fire OG from Pheno Finder Seeds. Fire OG is itself OG Kush crossed with San Fernando Valley OG, so this sits deep in the Californian OG family on both sides. Solid, dense flower under a heavy coat of frost.

Deo Farms in Oakland crossed Rainbow Sherbet with Pink Guava, grew out a hundred seeds and kept phenotype 21. Both parents are known for fruit and tropical aroma, and the Pink Guava side traces back through a selection of OZ Kush.

Grapefruit crossed with Durban Poison, and sold elsewhere as Grapefruit Durban. Durban Poison is a South African landrace sativa named for the port city it came from; the Grapefruit side is the sweet citrus line that circulated on the west coast and in British Columbia. Citrus over a resinous base.

Hash Seed crossed Lemon Butter Biscuits with Super Lemon Haze for this one. The haze side is Super Silver Haze over Lemon Skunk, and the biscuits side runs back through MAC, Magnum Opus and Peanut Butter Breath.

Known at the counter as Spring Smiles, and in the seed catalogues as Kannabia Seeds' Smile: AK-47 crossed with Orange Bud, the Orange Bud side keeping the plant short and the buds hard. Fast for a sativa hybrid, at eight or nine weeks. Cut grass over tangy fruit on the nose.

A Green Dot Labs original, crossing Headbanger with Han Solo Burger — which puts OG Kush, Sour Diesel, Chem D and Girl Scout Cookies in its background. Sharp diesel and savoury garlic up front, with cookie dough behind it.

Exotic Genetix crossed GG4 with Cookies and Cream for this one, which is where both halves of the name come from — diesel funk and oily resin from the Glue side, vanilla and dessert sweetness from the Cookies side.

Three parents, not two: Chem's Sister, Sour Dubb, Chocolate Diesel. GG Strains put them together in Nevada in 2013, and the result is also sold as Original Glue. Sharp diesel, a faint cocoa note behind it, and enough resin to earn the name.

Mendo Breath, from Gage Green Genetics in 2013 — Mendo Montage crossed with OG Kush Breath, which puts Mendo Purps and Purple Urkle on one side and OG Kush and Girl Scout Cookies on the other. Dense flower with purple through it, and a confectioner's nose: vanilla, caramel, brown sugar.

A Cinderella 99 descendant, selected out for the citrus that gave it its name. C99 came from Brothers Grimm out of Jack Herer and Shiva Skunk, so this shares a grandparent with the Jack Herer on our own shelf. Limonene leads.

Sensi Seeds bred this in the Netherlands in the 1990s from Haze, Northern Lights #5 and Shiva Skunk, and named it for the American author and activist. Bright pine off the Haze side, grounded by the resin and earth the other two bring.

An heirloom Hawaiian sativa off the volcanic slopes of Maui, grown there since the 1960s and carried to California by surfers in the early seventies. Tropical on the nose — pineapple, mango, citrus zest. Its history is oral rather than documented.

A selection out of the original Runtz cross — Gelato #33 with Zkittlez — picked by the Runtz Crew in California for its deep colour and its grape-and-berry side. Sweet fruit syrup from the Zkittlez half, creamy gas from the Gelato half.

Native Flower lists this one as an indica. We could not find a published account of its background that we were willing to stand behind, so there is nothing here about lineage or aroma. Ask at the counter — we will tell you about the jar in front of you.

Bred by ThugPug Genetics from GMO — Garlic Cookies — and a Mendo Breath male, first released as a limited run around 2016. The nose is the reason for the name: pungent garlic, with citrus sitting over the top of it.

Sunset Sherbet crossed with Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies, out of the Bay Area work of the Cookie Family and Sherbinskis. Phenotype 33 is the one that stuck, nicknamed Larry Bird for the jersey number. Compact, dense flower true to its Cookies side.

Seed Junky Genetics crossed Sherbert Bx1 with Gelato 41 for this one — both parents trace back to Sunset Sherbet, so the sweet, fruity citrus-and-berry character comes from both sides at once. Leafly named it their strain of the year for 2022.

A clone-only cultivar whose background is not settled — published accounts trace it variously to Purple White Widow, to a Pink Plant cross, and to Blackberry, and it may well be several plants sharing one name. What they agree on is the nose: sweet, with pine and pear.

Bred from Cherry Thai, Afghani and Lost Coast OG. Dark green flower under orange pistils and a heavy frost of trichomes, sometimes with purple showing through. Sweet cherry sitting over the diesel note the OG line carries.

A phenotype selected out of Ed Rosenthal Super Bud, which Sensi Seeds released in 2006 from a mix of African, Afghani, Hindu Kush, Mexican and Thai landraces. Tropical on the nose, as the name says — pineapple over a diesel undertone.

Chimera Seeds made this by crossing a long-kept California Orange clone with DJ Short's Blueberry. The flavour its breeder describes is bittersweet — orange and berry, like a soda — and the calyxes swell pale green with purple accents in the last fortnight.

Rare Dankness crossed Abusive OG with their own Rare Dankness #1 to make this, which puts it deep in the OG and Chemdawg family on both sides. Indica-dominant, and it grows the dense, heavy flower that suggests.

Bred in Amsterdam around 1994 by Scott Blakey — Shantibaba — at Green House Seed Company, from a Brazilian sativa landrace crossed with a South Indian indica out of Kerala. It won the High Times Cannabis Cup in 1995 and has been in circulation ever since.

CSI Humboldt bred this one back to itself over successive generations to lock in the phenotype they were after: a hard citrus profile and a sturdy plant. Around sixty-five days in flower, and the nose is exactly what the name promises.
