Edibles: how to start
How an edible is different from smoking, why two hours is the rule, and where to start if you have not eaten one before. Come and ask us.
An edible is not a different strength of the same thing. It is a different thing, and the part that catches people out is the clock.
Smoke or vapour arrives in a minute or two, so you find out quickly whether you want more. An edible goes through your stomach and your liver first. It can take half an hour. It can take two. And once it has arrived it stays for a good deal longer than an evening — plan for the next morning, not the next hour.
The two-hour rule, and why it exists
Nearly every difficult night with an edible is the same night: somebody ate one, nothing happened, so they ate another. Then both arrived at once.
So: two hours before you decide anything. Not ninety minutes because you are bored. Two. Put the pack away, go and do something else, and let the clock do the work. Nobody has ever regretted waiting.
What changes the wait
- Food. On an empty stomach it tends to arrive sooner and harder. After a proper meal it takes its time. Neither is wrong — just know which one you did.
- You. Two people can eat the same square and have two different evenings. There is no chart that fixes this, which is why the numbers below are a place to start rather than an answer.
- The product. A gummy, a cookie and a chocolate square do not behave identically, even at the same printed figure.
Read the pack
Every edible we make carries two figures: what is in one piece, and what is in the whole package. They are not the same number and it is the first one you care about.
A bar scored into squares is a lot of pieces. A pouch of gummies is a lot of gummies. Take one, put the rest away, and check the wrapper before you take another — an hour later is exactly when people misremember what they had.
If you have had more than you meant to
It wears off. That is the honest answer and it is usually the only one you need. Find somewhere comfortable, have some water, and let it pass. It is not a question of doing anything clever — it is a question of time.
And if you would rather talk to somebody, phone us. We have heard it before, we are not going to laugh at you, and we would far rather you rang.
Ask us anything. We have time.
Bring the pack in, or tell us what you have tried and how it went. Half of what we do at that counter is exactly this conversation, and it works a great deal better out loud than off a page.
Where to start
- You have never eaten one2.5 mg to 5 mg THC
- Start at the bottom of that. Pick a day with nothing in it, and wait two full hours before you decide anything at all.
- You have, once or twice5 mg to 10 mg THC
- Same two hours. If the last one did nothing, go up one step — not two, and not by eating a second one on top of the first.
- Every so often10 mg to 25 mg THC
- You know roughly where you sit. Read the pack anyway, because two products at the same weight are not the same product.
- Most weeks25 mg to 50 mg THC
- Cut to a piece rather than a pack, and keep the wrapper so you can check what you took.
- You already know your number50 mg THC and above
- Then this page is not really for you. Come and tell us what has been working and we will point you at the right shelf.
