Joints: from simple spliffs to moon rockets
A joint is the oldest and simplest way to smoke cannabis, and it has picked up an absurd amount of vocabulary along the way. Here’s what the words mean.
Papers
Papers differ in material and in weight. Thinner papers burn slower and get out of the way of the taste; thicker ones forgive more while you’re learning.
- Rice — very thin, slow burning, unforgiving
- Hemp — the middle ground, with a bit of texture to grip
- Wood pulp — the classic, easiest to roll, more noticeable taste
- Clear cellulose — a novelty, and they burn quickly
Sizes run from single wide up through 1¼, 1½ and king size. If you’re learning, 1¼ is the place to start: enough paper to work with, not so much that it burns like a campfire down one side.
Filters
A rolled card tip — a crutch, or a filter — does three things. It keeps the end open, it stops you inhaling loose material, and it means you can still hold the thing at the end. It does not filter in the way a cigarette filter does.
Cones
A pre-formed paper cone with the tip already fitted. You fill it and pack it rather than rolling it. If rolling is the part that puts you off, cones delete that part entirely and nobody will judge you.
The elaborate end
Past a plain joint the vocabulary gets creative and not everybody uses the terms the same way, but broadly:
- A spliff traditionally means cannabis mixed with tobacco. We don’t sell tobacco, so ours aren’t that.
- A twaxed joint has concentrate applied to the outside or worked into the roll.
- A moon rock is flower coated in concentrate and rolled in kief. Roll that into a joint and you have roughly what people mean by a moon rocket.
These burn slower and are considerably more concentrated than plain flower, so whatever you’re used to is not a good guide here. Start with a small amount and give it time. You can always take more later — and we are happy to talk it through before you buy.
Our pre-rolls
We roll our own, in singles and 3-packs, along with Lunar Spliffs. The products page has what’s on the shelf, and Tuesdays are when pre-rolls are on special — see the deals page.
Ask us anything. We have time — come in, or get in touch.
